东门之杨 东门之杨, 其叶牂牂[1]。 昏以为期, 明星煌煌。 东门之杨, 其叶肺肺[2]。 昏以为期, 明星晢晢[3]。 东门外的杨树, 叶子沙沙响。 约定在黄昏的时候, 长庚星闪闪发光。 东门外的杨树, 叶子哗哗响。 约定在黄昏的时候, 长庚星发光灼灼。 注释: [1] 牂牂(zāng zāng):风吹树叶的声音。 [2] 肺肺:同“牂牂”。 [3] 晢晢(zhé zhé):明亮的样子。 To a Weaving Maiden[1] At eastern gate we could Steep hemp in river long. O maiden fair and good, To you I'll sing a song. At eastern gate we could Steep nettle in the creek. O maiden fair and good, To you I wish to speak. At eastern gate we could Steep in the moat rush-rope. O maiden fair and good, On you I hang my hope. [1]The stalks of the hemp had to be steeped, preparatory to getting the threads or filaments from them so that the maiden might weave clothes.

衡门 衡门之下, 可以栖迟。 泌之洋洋, 可以乐饥[1]。 岂其食鱼, 必河之鲂? 岂其取妻, 必齐之姜? 岂其食鱼, 必河之鲤? 岂其取妻, 必宋之子? 支起横木即是门, 横木之下来栖身。 泌水荡漾漾, 快乐慰饥肠。 难道想要吃鱼, 一定要吃黄河里的鳊鱼? 难道想要娶妻, 一定要娶齐国姜家女? 难道吃鱼, 一定要吃黄河里的鲤鱼? 难道想要娶妻, 一定要娶宋国子家大姑娘? 注释: [1] 乐饥:乐而忘饥。 Contentment[1] Beneath the door of single beam You can sit and rest at your leisure; Beside the gently flowing stream You may drink to stay hunger with pleasure. If you want to eat fish, Why must you have bream as you wish? If you want to be wed, Why must you have Qi the nobly bred? If you want to eat fish, Why must you have carp as you wish? If you want to be wed, Why must you have Song the highly bred? [1]This showed that one might enjoy oneself and forget one's hunger, be satisfied with fish of smaller note and be happy with a wife though she were not of a noble family.

《陈风·东门之枌》

东门之枌 [1] 东门之枌, 宛丘之栩[2]。 子仲之子, 婆娑[3]其下。 穀旦[4]于差[5], 南方之原。 不绩其麻, 市也婆娑。 穀旦于逝, 越以鬷[6]迈。 视尔如荍[7], 贻我握椒。 东门外的白榆树, 宛丘上的柞树。 子仲家的姑娘, 大树下起舞。 选择一个好日子, 去到南边的平原上。 不纺手中麻, 闹市舞一场。 大好时光要结束, 你我屡屡总相遇。 看你美如荆葵花, 送我一束香花椒。 注释: [1] 枌(fén):白榆树。 [2] 栩:柞树。 [3] 婆娑:舞蹈。 [4] 穀旦:好日子。 [5] 差:选择。 [6] 鬷(zōng):总,屡次。 [7] 荍(qiáo):荆葵。 Secular Dancers[1] From white elms at east gate To oak-trees on the mound Lad and lass have a date; They dance gaily around. A good morning is chosen To go to the south where, Leaving the hemp unwoven, They dance at country fair. They go at morning hours Together to highland. Lasses look like sunflowers, A token of love in hand. [1]This song described wanton associations of the young people of Chen. The mound at the eastern gate was a favorite resort of pleasure-seekers.

《陈风·宛丘》

宛丘 子之汤[1]兮, 宛丘[2]之上兮。 洵有情兮, 而无望[3]兮。 坎其击鼓, 宛丘之下。 无冬无夏, 值[4]其鹭羽。 坎其击缶, 宛丘之道。 无冬无夏, 值其鹭[5]。 你的舞姿飘荡啊, 在宛丘的上面啊。 我诚有深情啊, 却徒然无望啊。 咚咚咚把鼓敲响, 在宛丘的下面啊。 不分冬夏舞不停, 摇着鹭鹚的羽毛。 当当当把缶敲响, 在宛丘的路上啊。 不分冬夏舞不停, 舞着鹭鹚的羽毛。 注释: [1] 汤:即“荡”,飘荡。 [2] 宛丘:四边高、中间低的土山。 [3] 望:指望,盼头。 [4] 值:持,拿着。 [5](dào):一种带羽毛的舞具。 A Religious Dancer[1] In the highland above A witch dances with swing. With her I fall in love; Hopeless, I sing. She beats the drum At the foot of highland. Winter and summer come, She dances plume in hand. She beats a vessel round On the way to highland. Spring or fall comes around, She dances fan in hand. [1]This song described the pleasure-seeking of the people of Chen in the capital where there was a mound in the highland, favorite resort of pleasure-seekers.
