To a Weaving Maiden[1]

At eastern gate we could

Steep hemp in river long.

O maiden fair and good,

To you I'll sing a song.

At eastern gate we could

Steep nettle in the creek.

O maiden fair and good,

To you I wish to speak.

At eastern gate we could

Steep in the moat rush-rope.

O maiden fair and good,

On you I hang my hope.

[1]The stalks of the hemp had to be steeped, preparatory to getting the threads or filaments from them so that the maiden might weave clothes.
