新台

新台有泚[1]，

河水弥弥[2]。

燕婉[3]之求，

籧篨[4]不鲜。

新台有洒[5]，

河水浼浼[6]。

燕婉之求，

籧篨不殄[7]。

鱼网之设，

鸿[8]则离[9]之。

燕婉之求，

得此戚施[10]。

新台照水倒影明，

河水涨得与岸平。

只说嫁个美少年，

嫁个蛤蟆不像人。

新台近水建得高，

河水涨满浪滔滔。

只说嫁个美少年，

嫁个蛤蟆不得了。

架起渔网为打鱼，

谁想打个癞蛤蟆。

只说嫁个美少年，

嫁个蛤蟆怎么办。

[2] 弥弥：水盛大的样子。

[3] 燕婉：安详和顺。

[4] 籧篨（qú chú）：蟾蜍，癞蛤蟆。

[5] 洒（cuǐ）：高峻的样子。

[6] 浼浼（měi měi）：水涨平岸。

[7] 不殄：没福相。

[8] 鸿：指蛤蟆。

[9] 离：罹难，遭遇。

[10] 戚施：蛤蟆。

The New Tower[1]

How bright is the new tower

On brimming river deep!

Of youth she seeks the flower,

Not loathsome toad to keep.

How high is the new tower

On tearful river deep!

Of youth she seeks the flower,

No stinking toad to keep.

A net for fish is set;

A toad is caught instead.

The flower of youth she'll get,

Not a hunchback to wed.

[1]This was a satire against Duke Xuan of Wei who took his eldest son's bride as his own and built a new tower by the Yellow River to welcome her in 699 B. C. Here the toad and the hunchback refer to the duke and the flower of youth to his eldest son.
