A Farewell Song[1]

A pair of swallows fly

With their wings low and high.

You go home in your car;

I see you of afar.

When your car disappears,

Like rain fall down my tears.

A pair of swallows fly;

You go home with a sigh.

When they fly up and down,

I see you leave the town.

When your car disappears,

I stand there long in tears.

A pair of swallows fly,

Their songs heard far and nigh.

You go to your home state;

I see you leave south gate.

When your car disappears.

Deeply grieved, I shed tears.

My faithful sister dear

With feeling e'er sincere,

So gentle and so sweet,

So prudent and discreet!

The thought of our late lord

Strikes our sensitive chord.

[1]This was the first farewell song in Chinese history, written by Duchess Zhuang Jiang whose beauty was described in Poem“The Duke's Bride”and who bore no children but brought up the son of Duchess Dai Wei, who became Duke Huan of Wei and was murdered by his half brother on the 16th day of the 3rd moon in 719 B. C. In this farewell song the duchess related her grief at the departure of Duchess Dai Wei, obliged to return to her native State of Chen after her son's death. The“late lord”here refers to their husband.
